Nurses work long, demanding shifts, often without enough time to prepare meals, stay hydrated, or take proper breaks. Research shows that quick snacks and minimal rest often become the norm, which can take a toll on mental health and, ultimately, turnover and burnout.
Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach, Va., in partnership with Compass One Healthcare, has taken action to change this norm and redefine caring for clinical caregivers.
The hospital has opened Breakaway Bay, a 24-hour staff lounge designed for nurses and other clinical staff. This new space is all about showing appreciation for the incredible work nurses do every day and giving them a place to recharge and refuel.
“We’re doing this because the night shift asked for it,” said Sentara Princess Anne Hospital President Dana Weston Graves at a nighttime ribbon cutting where staff were invited. “The QR code survey, the employee engagement survey, the leader rounding comments all asked for access to food at night, and so, here we are.” Graves also mentioned the naming contest for the space among the staff.
Breakaway Bay is a badge-access area where nurses and clinical support staff can take breaks, grab nutritious sandwiches, wraps, salads and snacks, hydrate with bottled waters and teas and get fresh coffee, and take a well-deserved rest and reset.
Graves thanked Morrison and Compass One Healthcare for launching this first-in-the-nation initiative at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital as a new model for staff support, especially during overnight hours when cafeterias are closed.
“When we invest in the health and wellbeing of our clinical caregivers, so they are more equipped to operate at top of license with sustainable energy,” said Aundrea Mills, Chief Nursing Officer, Compass One Healthcare. “This is more than just a room. By creating this space, we’re not only addressing a critical need but also sending a clear message to our caregivers: we see you, we value you, and we’re here to support you.”
